You may know how to change a flat tire? But what about your teenaged child, who just got his or her license?
According to a 2011 survey, two out of three teen drivers don't know how to change a flat tire. Make sure your new driver knows what to do if they suddenly find themselves on the side of the road in this situation.
The best thing to do, obviously, is to teach them how to change a flat tire. If you don't have this skill, it's time that you learned how, too. Even if you and your teen are comfortable with a lug wrench, changing a tire can be risky, particularly if you're on the side of a busy roadway. Be aware of the dangers and make sure that your new driver considers his or her surroundings before taking the jack out of the trunk.
Your teen may have a cell phone to call mom or dad in an emergency, but that's not always going to be sufficient for a roadside emergency, particularly if they're more than a few miles from home when it happens. Our customers can also give us a call and we can arrange for roadside assistance or dispatch a tow truck to their location. Another alternative is to consider purchasing a membership in a motorists' assistance service, such as AAA, for your young driver.
If there are absolutely no alternatives available, it may be possible for your son or daughter to drive for about one mile on a flat tire without incurring irreparable damage to the tire. This is a last resort, and a tire that has been used in this manner should be inspected carefully by our staff at Jersey Guy Automotive before being allowed to remain in service on the vehicle.
