Avoid Fines & Accidents with Working Brake Lights

by Alex B. of Jersey Guy Automotive

First off, let me ask you a very simple question. What do you think costs the least, a simple brake light repair or an accident repair? Obviously, the former will always cost you less, especially when you just have to replace a bulb. In recent months, it seems that New Jersey drivers will have to be much more aware of their brake lights, unless they want to pay a $47 fine. Right now, New Jersey drivers are required to have two properly working brake lights. This actually leaves drivers with the ability to overlook their high mounted brake light, as they cannot be cited for an equipment violation.

For now at least.

A recent bill is pending final legislation, one that would require ALL brake lights to always be functioning. Those supporting this bill are hoping that this will help prevent certain types of car accidents. They feel that improperly working high mounted brake lights can give drivers that a several cars back the impression that they are not stopping, when in reality they are. Obviously this can lead to all types of accidents, which can definitely cause some stress on the wallet. The major issue that many connect with this recent bill is the fact that NJ stopped requiring safety inspections three years ago. Since then, many drivers merely overlook safety related issues like replacing brake lights.

Think of it this way. By taking a few moments of your day to check your lights can help you avoid a costly accident. Wouldn't you want to avoid putting you and your family's safety at risk? Now, with the possibility of also being fined $47 (if this bill is passed) you should definitely get in the habit of being more aware of your vehicle's state. Actually, why stop there? Start focusing on your driving and surroundings as well. Avoid distracting yourself while driving, to make sure you are prepared for anything the road throws at you.

What do you think of this bill? Are you a driver that relies on the high mounted brake lights to tell you to slow down? How aware are you really while you drive? Let us know if you think this bill is fair or not!
