Changing your tires can be a hassle, but it's a necessary evil. The beginning of the summer season is a great time to be checking and replacing your tires. One might ask though, why change your tires at all?
To put it simply, it's all about traction. Your tires have grooves called treads that help your vehicle drive under wet conditions. These grooves allow water to escape from under your tires. Without the treads, liquids cannot be compressed fast enough and driving becomes dangerous and difficult.
A good tip to try when assessing whether or not your tires need changing is the good old penny trick. Place a penny heads first into the treads of one of your tires. If the top of Lincoln's head is covered, then your treads need changing. If not, your tires are fine. Tire Rack recommends that, if wet roads are a concern, replace your tires when the treads reach 4/32" of the remaining tread depth. If snow is a concern, try replacing your tires when 5/32" is reached.
You should always check your tires periodically for tread depth. Keep this information in mind when doing your own tire inspection this summer. It just might come in handy!
