Safety Tip: Installing an Infant Car Seat

Everyone can agree that a child's safety is priority number one. The best way to ensure a child's safety while driving is to properly install their car seat. The DMV has a few tips to make sure your installation goes smoothly, but be sure to consult the manufacturer's manual.

First, you must install the safety seat in the back seat of the car. Tighten the seatbelt straps if you notice that you can move the car seat an inch or more. Then, be sure to check if there are any twists in the seat belt straps. This could cause your seat to be insecure. When adjusting the car seat, make sure it is in the correct recline angle. Some come with a built in seat adjuster to help you. Make sure your carrier handle is out of the way when the car seat is attached, this is especially important if your seat came with a base.

Now that your seat is installed, it is important to make sure your child is placed into it properly. His or her back should lie flat against the bottom of the seat. Tighten the carrier straps and make sure that the harness clip is even with the infant's shoulders. Always be sure there are no twists in the harness straps and that they fit snuggly.
