Cruise Control No-No: Driving in the Rain

Be sure to turn off cruise control when driving in a rain storm. Hydroplaning while using cruise control can be even more dangerous. Lifehacker.com explains why:

Cruise control can be really helpful, especially while on long road trips. That being said, you should look out for rain and wet conditions. Wet roads can be extremely dangerous due to the fact that rainwater causes the oil and grease on the road to float on the water. This makes the roads very slippery, almost like ice. If your tires can't tread through water fast enough, your situation could be made worse. This is called hydroplaning and it can happen as slowly as 35 mph.

Hydroplaning while using cruise control is more dangerous because it keeps your car going at a constant speed. Disable cruise control by applying the brakes. Be careful, if you don't have anti-lock brakes your skidding could be made worse.

If you find yourself driving in the rain, slow down and disable cruise control. If you notice that you're hydroplaning, take your foot off the gas and grasp the wheel with both hands and steer in the direction in which you're skidding.
