Preparing Your Child’s Car for College

It's a big decision to allow your child to take a car to college. While it can give her the freedom to drive to and from a job, explore new areas, or come home on the weekends without depending on others, it's a huge responsibility for your student and for you as a parent.

Here are some things to consider in making the decision, and things to remember if you decide to allow her take the car to school:

• Know the university's parking policies. Parking could be designated in a remote or hard to access area. What is the cost of parking?

• Your child should become familiar with the roads and traffic laws of the city or state where the college is located. Check http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/bystate/index.html for info on local traffic laws in every state and US territory.

• Have an understanding and set guidelines in advance about who is allowed to drive or borrow the car. Do you want your son's best buddy to take over if he is too tired, has been drinking or wants to do someone a favor?

• Teach your child how to do basic maintenance on the car: check tire pressure, change a flat, and check windshield washer fluid and other fluid levels, and check lights. If your child will be away with the car for more than three months, make sure he is familiar with the necessary preventive maintenance schedule.
