How often should I change my oil? Which oil should I use? Is synthetic better than conventional oil? These are common questions that are frequently asked. Let's look at some specific points.
1. Longevity. Let's start with the long answer. Synthetic oil is better in both form and function than conventional oil. Synthetic oil offers more longevity and can withstand higher temperatures and extreme conditions. Some synthetics can last up to three times longer than conventional motor oil meaning less oil changes. That said, synthetic oil is not a cheap date. It can be as much as double the price as conventional motor oil.
2. Environmental concerns. Conventional motor oil is petroleum based and synthetic is chemical based. Both pollute the environment. Synthetic oil lasts longer and thus less oil changes (and wasted oil) are necessary. Their composition is much cleaner, because it is derived in a laboratory rather than nature, and it has been proven to have a lower volatility and therefore not vaporize out the exhaust as quickly. Synthetics have also been shown to produce less resistance in the engine and therefore offer more horsepower and overall efficiency for the engine. This added horsepower in return means that the engine will be able to perform at the same level as before, but using slightly less gas. Recycling oil also helps reduce the impact on the environment.
3. Manufacturer's Specifications. At the end of the day the best advice is to follow the manufacturer's specifications. They engineered the vehicle and they know best. Plus, not following instruction could cause problems or void the warranty. If you are worried about the environment, your wallet and other issues, take these in consideration when purchasing your next car.
