Planning Your Inground Swimming Pool

As with most projects, the key to success in building an inground swimming pool is planning. Here are some basic considerations for planning a swimming pool:

1. Decide how you will use your pool, whether it will be for entertaining, exercise or for the kids.

2. Consider the legal and financial aspects of owning a pool, including insurance, construction and routine upkeep.

3. Consider the size and conditions of your yard, including slope, soil type and accessibility for construction equipment. Choose a level spot if possible.

4. Design your pool. Consult a pool professional to help you determine which size and shape would be an ideal fit for your particular yard as well as determining possible maintenance costs. Be sure to keep in mind what you want around the pool, such as decks and patios. Make sure to have the most up to date zoning and building restrictions.

5. Choose a professional builder. Do your research. Talk to at least three builders when getting estimates. Determine the number of years they have been in business, ensure that they are bonded and insured, visit their work firsthand or ask for examples, and determine if they subcontract the work or use their own staff.

6. Select the right pool equipment and supplies. Also, consider safety equipment, such as water alarms, high-tech laser technologies, safety covers and personal safety accessories like life jackets and pool floats.
