I will be sending out a series of information on dementia. Dementia effects all of our lives in one way or another and I think it is very important that we all be knowledgeable about the disease!
What is dementia?
Dementia is not a disease itself: it is a group of symptoms that may accompany certain diseases or conditions.
Dementia is the loss of intellectual functions (such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning) to the point it interferes with a person's daily functioning
Symptoms may also include changes in personality, mood and behavior
The following Neurocognitive Disorders that cause dementia symptoms are
- Alzheimer's disease
- Vascular dementia
- Fronto-temporal dementia (Pick's Disease)
- Lewy body disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Huntington's disease
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
- Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome
