Is it worth it to buy skiing or snowboarding equipment?

Should I rent or buy? If you're a new rider, this can be a daunting decision. Here are some things to consider as you contemplate the possibilities of your new sport:

• Renting gear is a great option for getting out on the slopes and getting your feet wet - and finding out if you'll warm up to the sport.
• Go to a quality ski and snowboard shop where you can get guidance from an experienced and helpful expert on renting and options for buying.
• Whether you've been riding for a while or whether you knew it was love on the first run, beware of purchasing used rental gear. A better bet is to select used, individually owned equipment from a reputable ski and snowboard shop.
• Your skill level will progress much faster if you don't have to adjust the bindings or get used to different equipment every time you ride.
• If you are hesitant, start with buying your own boots.

Just remember -- the gear doesn't make the rider or the skier, but it certainly helps.
