"Shred the gnar" in comfort
You may be a
never-ever, but the call of cruisin' under a clear blue sky
in the crisp mountain air has finally gotten to you. Wearing the
right apparel will enable you to 'tear it up' for a longer period
of time.
Generally, wear 3 layers. You will need:
- Base layer: long underwear and quality snowboard socks. The
best materials are synthetic wicking materials that draw moisture
away from the body as well as keep you warm. Choose thinner
snowboard socks over thicker ones.
- Middle layer: general clothing to provide extra insulation
and transfer moisture away from the inner layer. Wool and fleece
are both great choices.
- The outer layer: Serves as the barrier between you and the
winter mountain environment. Wear windproof and waterproof
apparel that is also breathable. This includes padded gloves -
preferably those that are designed for snowboarding with a fleece
lining - to protect your hands from snow, ice and impacts.
Don't forget a beanie, hat or helmet. Do not
expose your head and ears to extremely low temperatures.
Remember, you can lose up to 90% of your body's total heat
through the top of your head. If you prefer to wear a hat, choose
one with ear flaps. For head protection put on a snowboard
helmet.
