Elevated Work Platform (EWP) or Elevator Installation Platform, is a type of mechanical device that is used to access high-up areas that are normally impossible to reach. These platforms generally comprise of the working platform itself, made of a small sized base and with a mechanical 'arm' and railings or cage used for elevating it. Hydraulic platforms

These are the commonest types of mobile elevated platform, and are also referred to as boom lifts, 'cherry picker' or articulated EWP. It operates on hydraulic power and appears just like a crane that comprises of isolated jointed sections that help in up-and-over work. It is often referred to as 'cherry picker' as it was used earlier in orchards, where trees could not be damaged due to a jointed design. Nowadays, it can mean different types of EWPs.

Scissor lifts

It can only move in a vertical direction, due to varied 'unfolding' elevation system in which a criss-cross structure compresses and elongates itself to change the height. This can be hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically operated. This type of movable working platform is supported powerfully, and can bear a lot of weight. It makes use of a bigger sized platform.

Extendable working platforms

An extendable work platform is smaller in size, and makes use of Screw threads or Rack and pinion for extending height. These have a much shorter reach, and can bear much less weight - which makes them more practical for indoor use.
