How the 24-Hour News Cycle Has Changed Our Lives

No matter which side of the aisle you're on, it's likely that you have a 24-hour news channel dedicated to perpetuating certain viewpoints. This is worlds away from how news used to be, and it can be a bit overwhelming for people. Is all of this breaking news really breaking, or is it just the same talking points repeated ad nauseam? Is the 24-hour news cycle the right place to get your news? The short answer is: probably not.

Is This News or Is It Just a Business?

At its base level, news is useful. It provides you with information about current events and what's going on in the world locally, nationally and globally. In the information age, it can be difficult to parse through all of the news sites and find something unbiased. When it comes to the breaking news 24-hour cycle, you'll likely be unable to find the basic facts. What you're more likely to find is opinionated talking heads who espouse the values of their particular sides. When you get your news from the breaking news cycle, you're often going to experience a bit of an echo chamber effect. In addition, many of these outlets tend to prefer to make their more polarizing views prevalent. The main goal of the 24-hour news cycle is to get more viewers, which adds to the bottom line. In short, it's not the best place to get news.

How Do You Deal With the 24-hour Breaking News Cycle?

It seems easy enough to just avoid the 24-hour breaking news cycle in your daily life, but unfortunately, it's not that simple. If you want to engage in discussions or discourse about the news, it's likely that you'll come across others who use the 24-hour news channel as their primary resource. You'll see these talking heads cited and reposted on social media. In the end, it can be hard to avoid this media, but at the very least you don't necessarily have to engage with it. Polarization isn't good for anyone, so staying respectful and finding your own news sources is always going to be a better path.
