What Are the Different Types of Lesbian Aesthetics?
If you're new to the lesbian dating scene, you have a lot to
learn! There are many different lesbian aesthetic types you'll
likely come across as you start dating around. You've probably
already considered this, but it's a good idea to learn the common
terms that lesbians often use to define themselves or one
another. That way, you can more easily navigate the ins and outs
of lesbian culture and define your own identity as a lesbian too.
Common Lesbian Aesthetic Types
-
Butches: A butch lesbian is someone who has
more of a masculine energy and vibe. There are different types
of butches (soft butch, studs, short-haired butches,
long-haired butches, etc.), but generally speaking, they are
the opposite of femme lesbians.
-
Studs: A stud is a butch woman or nonbinary
person who is Black or Latinx. The term has largely been
appropriated by white dykes on TikTok, but it is a racially
specific term. Studs are typically influenced by hip hop and
urban cultures.
-
Futches: A futch lesbian is a queer woman or
nonbinary person who is both femme and butch. They may be more
feminine or butch and effortlessly switch between the two.
-
Femmes: Femme lesbians have a more feminine
style and energy. Typically viewed as the opposite of butches,
femmes are difficult to pin down because there are so many
types. Fashion-wise, they might wear a suit or a dress for a
special occasion, and they'll look incredible in both.
-
High femmes: A high femme is an extremely
feminine lesbian. They typically love makeup, skincare and
lipstick, and they love to pamper themselves with manis, pedis,
massages...you know, the works.
-
Chapstick lesbians: You'll find a chapstick
lesbian planted firmly between a butch and a lipstick lesbian.
They know how to take care of themselves, but they're pretty
low maintenance.
-
Lipstick lesbians: Lipstick lesbians are more
high-maintenance than chapstick lesbians, and they're also
sometimes called "doily dykes" or "skincare lesbians." A
lipstick lesbian likely has a pretty intense skincare routine,
prefers lipstick over chapstick and is very similar to a high
femme.
-
Baby dykes: A baby dyke is someone who has
just come out of the closet. Usually, this term applies to very
young women, but it can also apply to people in their 20s, 30s
and beyond. As baby dykes are still learning all the lesbian
lingo and deciding how they want to dress, act, etc., it's a
pretty awkward phase. Fortunately, it doesn't last forever.
-
Celesbians/dykons: A celesbian or dykon is an
idol or a celebrity (think Ellen or Wanda Sykes).
Regardless of what lesbian
aesthetic types you identify with, you should know that you
matter. And you don't have to be defined by a label. Your
sexuality and identity can be fluid, and you don't have to dress
or act a certain way to be an accepted member of the LGBTQ
community.
