Boiler Control System For Energy Management

In industrial processing units, main source of steam and hot water are boilers, and demand of steam, frequently varies according to requirement. It is therefore, required that there should be a properly designed boiler, which should be capable of fulfil load demands variations. But, while doing this, boiler should maintain its efficiency, and there are many techniques of boiler control system. These are local boiler controls and direct digital controls. Local boiler controls are employed when, boilers are in stand alone manner. In this case, it is necessary, that water level must be set at right level in the systems. Whereas, DDC i.e. direct digital controls are employed in systems where multiple boilers are used. Direct digital controls are systems, which can handle multi-boiler staging according to demand.

Boiler controls, when used for domestic applications, has a device called aquastat, whereas in commercial applications, where large power boilers are required, advanced control systems are used. There are many other types of boiler controls are available, these are 1) multi-boiler staging, in this method, there are multiple boilers, which are made on and off depending upon demand. 2) modulating control, in this method, fuel and air supplied to burner are changed according to demand. 3) On-off control, in this method, boiler gets ON and reaches a high fire level and then settles at that stage, until temperature reaches a priorly decided set point is reached.

Few more boiler controls are step-up/step-down control, in this method of control, more than two firing rates are there depending upon demand. Another methos of control is Oxygen trim control, in this method of control, the quantity of oxygen present in combustion gases is determined and then surplus air is reduced, so that highest efficiency can be achieved. One more method is excess air regulation control, in this method, ratio of excess air to supplied fuel is maintained to achieve highest burning efficiency. Then there is drum level control, this methodis applied for those boiler systems, in which drum water level is considered to be important.
