Safety Hazards to Watch Out for in Baby Clothes

There's nothing more enjoyable than putting your baby in an adorable little outfit! Not only does it make them photo-ready, but it keeps your bundle of joy warm and comfortable.

Before you start playing baby dress-up, there are many potential hazards to be aware of as you pick an outfit. Here are some safety hazards you might encounter in poorly designed baby clothes.

Drawstrings

Drawstrings and other cords are a big no-no! You might see string-style fasteners on hooded sweatshirts, pants, and more. While they do make achieving a snug fit easier, drawstrings can be problematic.

In tops, the string can quickly tighten around your baby's neck. It can also snag on items and squeeze limbs. Even cords on arms and legs are dangerous. If they become too tight, the garment could end up cutting off circulation.

It's best to stick to baby bodysuits and other garments that don't require drawstrings to put on.

Loose Accessories

We've all seen clothes that have fun little accessories. Some pieces have dangling bells that make noise or oversized buttons that offer a cute cosmetic twist. Flashier designs can have lights and built-in batteries!

While cute to look at, these accessories are all choking hazards. Babies are notorious for pulling on items. It doesn't take much force to dislodge accessories. With their penchant for putting things in their mouths, those cutesy additions can turn your fun times into a nightmare pretty quickly.

Oversized Fit

Believe it or not, ill-fitting clothes can be risky. Excess fabric can wrap around your baby's face, suffocating them as they try to sleep. Even if that doesn't happen, there's always a risk that the fit can lead to overheating.

Always choose garments that fit correctly. Tight-fitting baby bodysuits are best, as they provide free movement without any extra fabric.

Dress for Safety

There's nothing wrong with giving your baby some cute style. However, make sure to examine every article of clothing closely. Plan for the worst-case scenario and avoid anything that could cause harm.
