Design Mockups

What Are The Different Dos And Don'ts Of Design Mockups?

The mockups can be a truly great option for making your design look more professional and real, thus helping the client to get an idea on what a design can look like in the 'real-world' context. To help you use or create your own, there are hundreds of resources out there. But there can be something like a dark side to it as well. To sell a sub-par design, the designers can rely too much on using a nice mockup or can simply do a poor job in creating the mockup which may then distract the client from the real design, misleading them to thinking that they are going to receive deliverables which they aren't.

To enhance your best design mockup, here are some dos and don'ts that you need to know about.

Do be absolutely clear

Be crystal clear about what you can and what you cannot produce for your client. Be clear about what is the design and what constitutes the mockup. You can negotiate with the clients for additional deliverables after the completion of the contest, if they inquire into your work.

Do curate your mockups

The main purpose of a mockup is to make your design look better, to show what it will really look like in the real-life situation. So, if you are ignoring the overarching brand style that the corporation is looking for or if you start going too overboard with examples or using a cluttered background, then you are going to do the opposite of what you are trying to do. Always pick or find the right way to tell your brand story, like using some effective logos and labels.

No shortcuts please

It's fine if you don't want to create your own mockups. To help you make fast examples of the work there are plenty of legal resources online. But remember, before choosing any site, make sure to check the licensing and terms of use, without taking any kind of shortcuts.

Don't just show the mockup

Mockups are truly amazing but your client is going to need to see what the actual file or the end product is going to look like. This is the reason why so many designers do these presentation-style longer mockups. It's helpful to show, say a logo on various textured and colored backgrounds. In order to see what kind of changes it's possible to make, the client can look at it from different angles.
