How to Swaddle Your Baby

Swaddling a baby is as much art as it is science. Besides that, it is a lesson in patience. However, it is an essential soothing technique for newborns. When you walk through the newborn unit at the hospital, you will see that all the little ones are swaddled.

How a Snug Burt's Bees Baby Blanket Soothes a Baby

Remember that your newborn just left the close confines of the womb. There, the small space prevented more extreme startle reflexes. Also, the womb kept your little one warm. The baby blanket mimics the warm and snug environment.

Turning a Baby Into a Burrito

If you already know how to make burritos, you have an easy time with the swaddling technique.

  • Square blanket. Start out with a square blanket you place with the bottom corner toward you and the top corner facing away from you.
  • Fold over. Fold over the top corner that is facing away from you. This is where the baby's head goes.
  • Wrap a side. Take one side of the blanket, wrap it over the baby, and gently tuck it under the newborn.
  • Cover the feet. Next, fold up the corner of the blanket that is right in front of you. It now covers the newborn's feet.
  • Wrap the other side. The final step is to wrap the other side of the blanket over the body. Tuck it under when the little one is lying down.

Choosing a Blanket and Refining the Technique

A soft Burt's Bees baby blanket is a good choice. Any blanket made of cotton, linen, or another organic material works well. Select a material in keeping with the temperature. If your little one is wearing clothes, you will do fine with a thin blanket. Also, do not wrap the baby too tightly. You want the fit to be snug but allow for some movement. Once the baby starts to roll over, it is time to transition from a swaddle blanket to an organic sleeping sack.
