Lunge Workouts to Strengthen Your Core


You might have heard that lunges work out most of your body, and it's true. Doing lunges strengthens your back, buttocks, legs, your core and more. It might surprise you to know that there are different kinds of lunges. Lunges can be done in any direction. You might find that you like some more than others. As long as you're working out the muscles you want to work out, you have a lot of freedom in the type you choose. Let's take a look at some lunge workout instructions you can do to strengthen your body and core.

Traditional Lunge or Forward Lunge

This type of lunge happens when you take a step forward (about two feet) and drop down at a comfortable level. Lift back up and return to a standing position. When you step back, you can go into a forward lunge with the other foot. Don't worry about keeping your back at 90 degrees. Some people need to lean forward. However, it's important to keep your back straight. Also, if you want to focus on sets and repetitions, try three sets of 10 repetitions before you switch legs.

Reverse Lunge

The reverse lunge is like the forward lunge, but you step back two feet onto the ball of your foot. Lower yourself down. Come back up and put both feet together. You will want to hold your hands together while doing this lunge to help keep your balance. If you want to do this exercise with dumbbells, you will keep these at your side rather than in front of you.

Lateral Lunge

If you want a really good exercise for your gluteus maximus, medius and minimus while working out your thighs and core, the lateral lunge is for you. You begin by placing your hands on your hips. Step to the side and lower yourself down. Raise back up and return to standing position again.

Increase Your Resistance

When you're doing lunges, you can incorporate dumbbells, a barbell, kettlebells and resistance bands to increase the amount of resistance you experience. However, you can use your bodyweight alone, and that's fine too. However, you will get a better workout with greater resistance.
