Emergency Maneuvering: This Is What You Should Know

Most of the major pieces of machinery on a ship are always given a standby system or emergency backup that can be used in case of the main unit's failure. A marine engine is also given an emergency maneuvering control system.

The responsibility of the main marine engine is the propulsion of the ship and its rotation and direction are controlled from either the engine control room or bridge through fuel lever control and telegraph. This particular control system is a remote-controlled one used for both maneuvering of vessel and sea voyage.

If from both the remote stations, i.e, ECR and bridge, the remote control maneuvering system fails to operate, extra safety is provided to the main marine engine by offering a local maneuvering control system.

The operating and the changeover process differ from engine to engine but the basics remain the same always.

What is the operating procedure?

• Wait for the wheelhouse order, after the fuel rack is successfully attached to the manual hand wheel control.

• After responding to the telegraph, provide air and fuel to the engine with the help of the local control levers.

• Follow the telegraph, maintaining the speed from the local fuel saver, once the marine engine starts.

About the changeover procedure

• It is better to do the change-over procedure when the marine engine is stopped.

• Change control from the wheelhouse to ECR. Both the telegraph on ECR and wheelhouse must be in the stop position.

• Bring the fuel lever of ECR and wheelhouse to the stop position.

• You will find that a changeover switch is given in the ECR. Operate that switch from ECR to local.

• After reaching the local control system, change over the fuel pump control shaft, right from local to manual.

• Depending upon the engine kind, a mechanical lever arrangement or cone clutch arrangement may be given.

• A locking clip or pin may be given as extra safety for the above-mentioned arrangement so that it doesn't come out while normal operation.
