How to Replace a Watch Battery

The process of replacing a watch battery can vary dramatically in difficulty. Some timepieces are straightforward, featuring an accessible compartment that only requires a couple of tools to pry open. Others require breaking waterproof seals and getting into intricately designed cases.

Snap Back Watch Cases

Slip the tool into the indentation and use it as a lever to pry the case open. Inside, you should see the replaceable battery.

Screw-Locked Cases

For this type of watch case, you'll need a small screwdriver. Many battery replacement kits or repair sets have the tools you'll need.

When you observe the back of the watch, you should see a series of screws. Most timepieces will have four around the perimeter. Unscrew the fasteners to loosen the case and reveal the watch.

Turn Lock Watches

You're most likely to see a turn-style lock on secondary watches. They're more affordable, so they don't require complex waterproofing and a tight seal.

The back of the watch may have a small turning slot. The slot is big enough to fit a coin! Use the coin as a screwdriver to turn the lock and open the case.

Screw-Off Cases

Finally, we have simple screw-off cases. These can be tough, but it doesn't require any special tools. The only thing you might need is a small amount of glue.

The glue can help you get a tight grip on the case. To open these watches, apply pressure to the back of the case with your thumbs. As you push down, twist in a counterclockwise motion to open it.

Swapping Out the Battery

Once you access the battery compartment, replacing it is as easy as repositioning the new element. Put the case back on, and you're good to go!
