Should I Put Expensive Things on My Baby Registry?

Hosting a baby shower is a special time to celebrate both the coming gift of a new life as well as the hard work that both mom and dad have put in to prepare for the baby. For many people, it's customary to bring a gift for the new arrival when attending a baby shower. The best place to find gifts is usually going to be the baby registry that mom and dad have set up.

For expectant parents, a baby registry is an opportunity to let people know what items they anticipate needing once their bundle of joy arrives, but parents often question whether they should include expensive items on a registry. Is it considered rude to expect people to make expensive purchases? Will you look strange if you only include inexpensive items?

It's Your Registry

While you can follow whatever rules you think people want you to follow, at the end of the day, it's your registry. Conventional wisdom says to put whatever you want on your baby registry and not to worry about what other people think. If someone wants to buy an expensive gift, let them. If they don't, they can purchase something less expensive.

People Like to Spend Money to Help Out

Something else to consider is that people like to spend money to help out loved ones. You'll likely be inundated with gifts for the baby before and after the birth of your child, and some people prefer to spend a little extra because it makes them feel good. As a result, consider putting some expensive items on your registry just for these types of people.

Value is in the Eye of the Beholder

Finally, remember that value is a subjective thing. While a dollar amount is an objective value of an item, some people value things like sustainability over money spent. Sustainable baby shower presents may mean more to you as well. If someone spends a little extra on sustainable baby shower presents, they may be placing more value on the environmental meaning behind the gift than the actual amount of money spent.
