3 Must-See Medieval Castles in Europe

Europe is home to amazing history and plenty of fine architecture. While some tourists travel to Europe to discover modern cities and experience new cultures, others venture into the countryside to check out the beautiful and majestic castles many European countries are famous for.

If you've always wanted to check out medieval architecture but weren't sure which castles to put on your list, below are three must-see medieval castles in Europe:

1. Castel Nuovo

Located in Naples, Italy, Castel Nuovo is a 13th-century structure that is located right across from the Piazza Municipio. Featuring a beautifully-crafted watch tower and an ancient Roman armory, Castel Nuovo is a must-see if you want to witness a slice of history.

2. Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle is a traditional Irish castle located in Waterford, Ireland. This historic structure was built on the banks of the River Suir, and it has even been featured on film and in television shows. Some of the interesting features you'll see when visiting Cahir Castle include spiral staircases and even authentic dungeons that once housed prisoners.

3. Bourtzi Castle

If you find yourself visiting Greece, make sure to check out Bourtzi Castle in Nafplio. This structure is situated along the shore of Agioi Theodoroi and was built by the Venetians. It was originally used as a defensive position to ward off attacking ships as they approached Greek shores, but it eventually underwent many renovations to be used as a luxury hotel in the 1960s. Today, Bourtzi Castle is a well-known landmark in Nafplio, and tourists love to visit the area to check out the local charm and take in the beautiful landscape.

While you're visiting any of the castles on this list, don't forget to pick up something to remember your trip by. A commissioned medieval architecture painting or similar piece of art can be a great way to capture your time abroad. If you plan to give a gift to friends or family back home, a commissioned medieval architecture painting would look great on anyone's wall.
