Why Nut Allergies Should be Taken Very Seriously

People can be allergic to all kinds of things, including pet dander, mold spores, and pollen. Out of all the various allergens out there, however, nut allergies tend to be some of the most significant and dangerous. Someone who is allergic to nuts like pecans or peanuts may experience serious adverse health events like anaphylaxis when exposed to nut allergens.

What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis occurs when the immune system views an allergen as a threat and causes the body to go into shock. During anaphylaxis, severe swelling may occur, particularly in the face and throat. This can lead to difficulty breathing and possibly fatal outcomes. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical treatment in an emergency room, but some people may be able to buy some time by using an epinephrine injection immediately following the onset of symptoms.

Other Harmful Nut Allergy Symptoms

Although anaphylaxis is the most serious concern when it comes to nut allergies, other outcomes can be distressing. Common pecan tree allergy symptoms may include rapid heart rate and low blood pressure. Other common pecan tree allergy symptoms can bring about wheezing and stomach pains.

In general, these reactions are more serious than typical allergic reactions to things like pollen or pet dander. In those cases, allergy symptoms are usually mild and are not considered a serious risk to one's health, but you should still consult with your physician if you believe that you are experiencing the symptoms of an allergic reaction to anything.

Preventing Allergic Reactions

If you know that you are prone to allergic reactions from nuts, make sure you research the ingredients used in the foods you eat. You may also want to ask the staff at any restaurant you dine in about the facility's food preparation areas to see if nuts or nut products are used in or near foods. Finally, talk to your doctor about keeping an epinephrine injector with you at all times if you experience an allergic reaction.
