How to Lose Weight Healthily

Did you know that over 45 million Americans go on a diet every year? Unfortunately, many people resort to fad diets and too-good-to-be-true products. While some weight loss trends can provide temporary results, they also come at a cost.

Many fad diets can put your long-term health at risk. So when you need help with weight loss, what can you do? Here are a few tips to help you slim down while staying healthy.

Be Realistic

Our first tip is to set goals you can realistically meet. The biggest problem with diet trends is that they promise big results in a short window. Your goal should be to make lifestyle changes. You want to get fit and remain that way moving forward.

Ideally, that means losing only one or two pounds a week. Goals like that make you more likely to keep the weight off. It's sustainable and better for your health.

Watch Your Diet

Of course, ditching junk food and fried meals is important. But it goes deeper than that. To stay healthy, you must fulfill your dietary needs while restricting calories.

There are a few ways to do that.

First, focus on plant-based foods. Fruits and vegetables ensure you get all the vitamins, minerals and micronutrients your body needs to thrive. Aim for at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily.

Next, switch to whole-grain products. Most processed foods contain refined grains that strip the grain of most of its nutritional benefits. By moving to whole grains, you get all the nutrients you need. Consider eating more brown rice, oatmeal, whole-grain bread, etc.

Contrary to popular belief, not all fats are bad. Healthy fats like olive, avocado and nut oils are good for your overall well-being. They can benefit your heart, give you energy, support cell function and more.

Finally, cut back on the sugar! The natural sugar in fruit is fine, but you should reduce your intake of added sugars in candy, sweets and other unhealthy foods.

Get Active

Our final tip that can make a difference when you need help with weight loss is to exercise. Make a habit of doing exercises that match your fitness level. Something as simple as walking 30 minutes several times a week can put you on your way to smashing weight loss goals.
