There's nothing quite like the soft feel of a baby's skin, but new parents are advised to be mindful of just how sensitive a baby's skin can be. There are several reasons why baby skin is soft and sensitive, including the fact that baby skin hasn't yet been exposed to years of sunlight or been flooded by hormones. As people age, these factors end up affecting the health of adult skin, but babies have it easy, at least for a little while.
If you're a new parent who wants to provide your baby's skin with the best protection, below are some tips:
Dress Your Baby in the Right Fabrics
You might think that all baby clothing is the same, but it's not. Many off-the-shelf baby clothing is manufactured using detergents and harsh chemicals as well as dyes that can irritate sensitive baby skin.
Organic cotton baby clothes, on the other hand, are typically free from all of these potential irritants. Additionally, organic cotton baby clothes are made from materials like bamboo that are incredibly soft to add further protection for your baby's skin.
Be Mindful of Temperature
Baby skin can get irritated by changes in temperature as well. The pores on a baby's skin are small, and this means that babies don't sweat easily. Unfortunately, this can cause irritation if you have your baby bundled up for the winter months.
To remedy this, dress your baby in breathable fabrics. Also, check on your baby's skin temperature regularly when they have been active for a while or when dressed in heavy clothing. Your baby may require a wipe-down with a cool, wet cloth to soothe hot skin.
Talk to Your Pediatrician
Despite all the precautions you take as a new parent to protect your baby's sensitive skin, it's always a good idea to talk to your child's pediatrician if you have concerns. Your pediatrician will be able to make personalized recommendations that take into account any medical concerns your baby faces or may face as they develop.
