Chime is a banking app that provides several unique features, including the ability to receive paychecks early. To use the app, you first need to download it from your preferred app store. Once installed, you will need to set up an account by entering in details like your name and email address in the app.
Opening an Account
You can use the app to open a bank account that includes a Visa debit card. This card can be used to access funds through the app or your account. An option also exists to open a separate savings account. You can connect direct deposit accounts to the app to have your paychecks sent to your account automatically.
Using Your Account
You can use your provided debit card just like a regular debit card issued by a bank. When you make a purchase using your card, funds are deducted from your account.
It's important to note that the app's provider is not a bank itself, but instead, services are provided through The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. If you have problems with transactions, you may have to speak with a representative from one of these organizations.
Does the App Charge Fees?
There are no fees to use the app or access your funds unless you withdraw money through an over-the-counter transaction like receiving cash back from a debit purchase. You may also be charged a fee to withdraw cash from an ATM.
Fees can change over time, but currently, the app only charges $2.50 as a transaction fee for qualifying withdrawals. Keep in mind that ATM service fees may be charged by the owner of an ATM, and stores may have their own fees for cashback transactions.
Unlike traditional banks, which can charge high overdraft fees, the app does not automatically assess overdraft charges. When you open an account, you are provided with a $20 limit on fee-free overdrafts. This limit can be raised to $200 in time. To receive a raise on your overdraft limit, you will need to contact the makers of the app or an account representative.
